Pussy Cat to Satakli, why is everyone competing for the most outlandish lyrics?

From tracks like Nakkaddwaley Disco (Delhi Belly; 2011) to Aata Majhi Satakli (Singham Returns; 2014), and the latest in the line, Paaji Tussi Such A Pussy Cat from upcoming Saif Ali Khan-starrer Happy Ending, there is no dearth of songs with outlandish lyrics. We explore why.

There was a time when lyrics seeped in poetry added substance to a song. Today, that seems like a far cry because of the songs that follow the pattern of, ‘the wackier, the better’. From tracks like Nakkaddwaley Disco (Delhi Belly; 2011) to Aata Majhi Satakli (Singham Returns; 2014), and the latest in the line, Paaji Tussi Such A Pussy Cat from upcoming Saif Ali Khan-starrer Happy Ending, there is no dearth of songs with outlandish lyrics.



Farah Khan’s latest release, had two songs with wacky lyrics — Satakli and Nonsense Ki Night. "Wacky songs are in vogue, and my kids like them. One should remember that you are dealing with a huge youth audience through your films, who like such songs. With Satakli, we were talking about Abhishek’s character, who is uneducated and Nonsense Ki Night was a last-minute entry," says Farah.

Himesh Reshammiya, who has composed music for an upcoming Ajay Devgn-starrer that has a song called Keeda agrees with Farah on the fact that such songs connect with the youth. He says, "The target audience for songs like these is the youth. Hence, the song is doing very well on digital platforms, which are mainly used by youngsters."

The lyricist also explains that people like such songs; that’s the reason they become chartbusters. "When I wrote songs for a romantic film like Issaq (2013), no one called me with more work, but people still talk to me about all my other songs. I feel it’s all about connecting with the listeners," he says.



Echoing a similar stance, director Raj Nidimoru, who has helmed the Saif Ali Khan-starrer that features the song, Paaji Tussi Such A Pussy Cat, says that wackiness stems from the script. "Our song comes from the fact that one character is heartbroken and another guy comes and tells him, Stop crying. So, it’s all about taking something in vogue and giving it relevance," says Raj.
