Recent real life incidents have seemed to inspire a spate of upcoming Bollywood films.
Not A Love Story
Inspired by: The murder of media executive Neeraj Grover, allegedly by naval officer Jerome Matthews, the fiance of his friend Maria Susairaj
In the film directed by Ram Gopal Varma, gruesome details from the infamous incident, including chopping off the victim’s body parts and the accused couple making out in front of the dead body, have been incorporated.
Varma has said, “I was attracted to the fact that Maria Susairaj was a struggling actor and all of the persons involved in the incident were ordinary people, who in a moment of madness, went berserk.”
Shanghai
Inspired by: Abhay Deol’s role is inspired by Justice Santosh Hegde, the former lokayukta of Karnataka. Hegde has exposed major irregularities in mines in Bellary, including those owned by ministers in the government of Karnataka.
Actor Abhay Deol recently said that he had drawn inspiration from Hegde for his role. “I saw him and immediately thought, ‘That’s the character I’m playing in Shanghai.’ He comes across as experienced, incorruptible lawmaker.”
Shootout At Wadala
Inspired by: The life of gangster Manya Surve, who was killed in an encounter in Mumbai in the 80s and the murder of journalist J Dey, allegedly by underworld gangsters, in June this year. Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta is directing this sequel to Shootout at Lokhandwala, and actor Saif Ali Khan is tipped to play Surve. Gupta has said that he had been looking for an underworld story since some time, and has finally got something.

Inspired by: Yoga guru Baba Ramdev’s fast at Ramlila Ground. The nine-days fast
against corruption invited UPA government’s ire. Police used lathi charge on Ramdev and his supporters.
Filmmaker Subhash Kapoor will helm the film, and hopes to cast actor Makrand Deshpande as Ramdev. Kapoor has said, “The film will be humourous as the whole incident is full of contradictions.”

Filmmakers: Anurag Kashyap and Sunil Bohra will produce the film, while Hansal Mehta will direct it. Actor Rajkumar Yadav who was last seen in Ragini MMS, will play Azmi in the film. The film draws inspiration from the life of the lawyers who fought for the rights of militants. Hansal Mehta has said, “The film will be fictionalised for cinematic purpose.”
