Toxic review and release highlights: Yash, Kiara Advani film braves bad reviews to outpace Pathaan, crosses ₹90 crore

Yash's film with Geetu Mohandas crosses ₹91.91 crore by 8 PM after the evening shows. The film is expected to cross the ₹100 crore mark on day 1.

On August 24, Bollywood filmmaker Siddharth Anand wrote on X that he booked first-day tickets for Toxic. Fans began spamming his post after the film's release today. Some asked him for his review, while others warned him about the negative reviews.

Geetu Mohandas' Yash-starrer has collected ₹82.88 crore in India, as of 7 PM despite the negative reviews.

One X user who believed the negative reviews for Toxic were due to fan wars wrote: “#ToxicTheMovie Review. Just finished my show. I thought the movie is getting negativity because of fan wars but it deserves. Leaving all hero wars, language wars, and state wars aside the movie is not at all good..It literally feels like watching 3hrs+ of slow motion reels..”

Ram Gopal Varma wrote on X: Now watching #Dhurandhar again. The internet thinks he's taking a dig at the negative reviews for Toxic, as it was initially set to clash with Dhurandhar 2 in March.

Toxic might be getting lukewarm reviews but Yash seems to be receiving all the love. “so toxic was kind of a misfire but…this Naveen Kumar Gowda guy really GAVE IT ALL MANN!!” wrote one fan on X, referring to the actor by his birth name. Another wrote, “As much as I enjoyed Toxic for Yash and the stunning visual appeal of the movie. But that plot twist didn’t work. It wasn’t earned. It felt like a narrative cheat.”

A Bengaluru theatre called Santosh was seen covered in confetti after fans watched a show for Yash's Toxic. The theatre management could be seen trying to clean it all.

Geetu Mohandas and Yash's gangster film crosses ₹79.12 crore in India by 6 PM, according to the trade website Sacnilk.

One review by an audience member on X read, “The sheer audacity to even think you can make a film like #Toxic deserves applause even if the final product is flawed. I was in awe of some of the technical execution in the film but sadly thats not enough, the whole experience matters. Cannot just dismiss it, Lots to talk about.”

Telugu actor-filmmaker Bandi Saroj Kumar reacted to the negative reviews for Yash's film, writing on X, "The fact that not a single voice on social media has come forward to support this film—despite receiving unanimous negative reviews from the public—speaks volumes. It implies that the project wasn't handed over to the PR "dog agencies" of the Telugu film industry (based in Jubilee Hills)."

He added, "Had it been given to them, they would have—in exchange for their fee—shouted and relentlessly pushed the narrative to place #Toxic at the very top of their "Hit Films of the Year" list. A good move by @TheNameIsYash and his team. Let the content speak for itself."

Toxic picked up pace in the evening, crossing ₹71 crore net domestically by 5 PM. It has surpassed the openings of Pathaan and Animal.

One positive review of the film read: “People didn't like #Toxic at all, but I'll be honest with you... overall executiion is poor..but I just cannot dismiss this film. The first half was badly edited and didn't focus on subplots, but the second half was a different film & the whole 15 min climax was mind-blowing.”

Toxic's makers announced that the film has already sold over 3 million tickets on online ticketing platforms - 2 million on BookMyShow and 1 million on District.

By 4 PM, Toxic had raced past the ₹60-crore mark, netting ₹61.15 crore in India. This helped it beat the opening day collection of SRK's Pathaan with 8 hours still left in the day.

The Hindi version of Toxic has already earned ₹29 crore net in India on its opening day, just ahead of Dhurandhar 1's total day 1 haul of ₹28 crore.

By 3 PM on Wednesday, Toxic had crossed the ₹50-crore mark domestically, with the evening and night shows still to go.

In a review titled ‘how to RUIN a movie completely in the 2nd half,’ a viewer writes on X (Twitter): “TOXIC starts off on a promising note and offers enough thrills, action and seeti-maar dialogues in the first half but goes completely haywire in the second half. It relies too much on violence, loud and unbearable BGM and forced massy dialogues. It’s literally tough to sit through.”

By 2 PM on its release day, Yash's Toxic was on the cusp of crossing the ₹50-crore mark in India. The film netted ₹48.53 crore in India, almost half of which came from the Hindi version.

Critic Anmol Jammwal called the early negative reviews ‘targeted’, and wrote: “Exaggerated claims from a certain section of the audience to dismiss it as a complete wipe out and disaster. It’s far from being the winner we all hoped and wished for. But these ‘disaster’ talks early in the morning was definitely targeted!”
