Salman Khan’s Kick turns 3: Why it is Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s best mainstream film

As Salman Khan’s Kick turns 3, here’s a look at why it’s Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s best mainstream film - even after his work in Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees.

Tuesday marks the third anniversary of Salman Khan’s superhit entertainer, Kick. Sajid Nadiadwala’s directorial released in 2014 and featured Randeep Hooda, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Jacqueline Fernandes along with Salman.

Nawaz played the main antagonist, Shiv Gajra, in Kick. Unlike his other big films, Kick did not shy away from offering quirky dialogues and ample amount of screen space to Nawazuddin.

Apart from being one the numerous Salman hits, Kick was also perhaps the first and arguably the only “commercial” movie that gave due respect and space to Nawazuddin.

While Nawazuddin has proved his mettle over and over again with films like Maajhi, Raman Raghav, Paan Singh Tomar and The Lunchbox, he mostly had small, strictly supportive roles when it came to mainstream cinema. All the entertainers that he has featured in either gave him little space, or were rather disappointing craft-wise.

From the cheap thrills that Gajra enjoyed to his histrionics and pure meanness, Nawaz’s character graph was pretty impressive. Kick also proved to be Salman Khan’s first film to enter Rs 200-crore club. Films like Freaky Ali and Munna Michael, on the other hand, were critically panned and even fared poorly at the box office.

If you have watched the film, it is Gajra’s demonic laugh that stays with you, so much so that even Salman tries to ape the mean laughter after killing him.
