Bollywood doesn’t need a reason to party and when it’s Diwali time, hosting a card party is nothing short of a tradition. Among those who top the list for organising these high-stakes bashes are filmmakers Ekta Kapoor, Sajid Khan, actors Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shilpa Shetty, Shah Rukh Khan and famous Bollywood families including the Bachchans and the Roshans. For some, it’s an annual tradition to invite friends from the fraternity for a lavish get together, others make the most of festivity and play the best of their cards.
While Ekta’s guest list for the annual taash party is a heady mix of the who’s who from the industry including Karan Johar, Neelam Kothari, Neetu Singh, Siddharth Mlahotra, Sonakshi Sinha, Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor etc, indulging in multiple rounds of flash and rummy all through the night, Rakesh Roshan’s buddy party turns out to be a get together for the veterans including Rishi Kapoor, Prem Chopra and Jeetendra, who reportedly play stakes ranging between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.
Filmmaker Sajid Khan’s card party, too, is known to be a happening do, and quite a high rolling one over the years, with sister, filmmaker Farah Khan, and actors Riteish Deshmukh and Malaika Arora being regular attendees. Talking of Khans, they are no behind when it comes to inviting friends over for Diwali bash. Shah Rukh Khan’s bash is overlooked by wife Gauri, who takes charge to design the menu and theme for the party.
As for actor Aamir Khan, sources say he plays safe at the card table, but is a lavish host. Flash, poker and rummy are played at the half a dozen card tables put up at his Mumbai residence. The stakes, sources say, go from Rs 5 a point to Rs 5,000 a point.
Diwali card party at Bachchan residence remains a sought after affair and shutterbugs crave to clicks the stars best in their party attires. A source says, “Like every year, Mr. Bachchan would be throwing a Diwali party this year also. But they don’t share the guest list because it’s a family affair and they prefer to keep it private only.”
Some big names, however, will be absent from the Diwali buzz in the country this year. Actor Akshay Kumar, for instance, has flown to the Maldives with family to ring in the festival. And desi girl Priyanka Chopra will celebrate in New York. The actor has reportedly planned to host a Diwali bash at her New York house for her Quantico crew and especially requested the DJ to play the Bollywood numbers.
Celebrating Diwali in true Punjabi style, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra also host a card party for their Bollywood pals every year, but there’ll be a void this time. “Because of Shilpa Shetty’s father’s demise, the family won’t have any Diwali get together year,” confirms a source.
Besides the top names from the industry, there are more in the list who’d be having gala Diwali celebrations. Dilwale actor Varun Sharma who will be celebrating Diwali with his friends and family in Punjab says, “It’s not very often that I get to meet my family and my childhood friends, but this year, I’ve taken a Diwali break and I will be speeding my time with my close ones and will host a Diwali card party for them. There’s no money involved when we play card games and since I’m going to be in Punjab, can’t invite my film friends.”
Actor-producer Sachiin Joshi also hosts a Diwali card party every year. “This year around too, Sachiin and his wife Raina Joshi would be hosting a Diwali party. Apart from family and friends, this fun-filled lavish affair will also be host to many affluent business men, sportsmen and actors. Like every year this year’s theme for the party promises to wow everyone,” informs their spokesperson.
