The 14th Mumbai Film Festival (MFF) organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), offers a platform to young Mumbai-based filmmakers in a competition titled Dimensions Mumbai, a brainchild of actor Jaya Bachchan. Filmmakers under the age of 25 can show their short films to the jury comprising actors Sanjay Suri, Geetanjali Rao and writer-director Reema Kagti.
Reema is almost a veteran of films by now, having worked on the Oscar-nominated Lagaan (2001) as an assistant director, directed Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd (2007) and written the story and screenplay of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) among other films.
“I want to see a mix of good content and good execution,” she says. “You can’t just judge on the basis of one aspect. Whether it’s storytelling or technique, a perfect balance has to be achieved.” If Reema was to make a short film for a contest like this, what would it be about? “That’s a tricky one,” she admits. “Currently, I’m in a feature film phase. But if I had to, I would make a film based on a personal incident or story.”
The director’s upcoming venture, Talaash, is set to hit the screens on November 30. She is happy with the way the film has turned out and says, “We shot most of the film in and around Mumbai. I had an excellent crew. We have put together a good film with a good story and some powerful performances by the principle and supporting cast.”
