Takht will reportedly have Kareena Kapoor’s all-powerful daughter Jahanara and Ranveer Singh as her brother Dara Shikoh.

Karan Johar’s epic Takht announced its massive star cast earlier this week and the film, set in the Mughal times, is already leading to a lot of speculation. Karan himself confirmed that it is about two “warring brothers”. And now, a Bollywood Hungama report has said that Anil Kapoor will play Shahjehan in the film with Kareena Kapoor Khan as his favourite daughter Jahanara Begum and Vicky Kaushal as his son Aurangzeb. Ranveer Singh, who played Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat, will star as Shahjehan’s elder son, Dara Shikoh.

The two brothers fought for the throne with Aurangzeb eventually killing Dara Shikoh to become the emperor. The report quotes a source as saying, “Apart from her equation with Karan, who is directing the film, Kareena has agreed to be part of such a strong cast also because of the fabulous role she plays. In fact, her role is equal to Ranveer and Vicky’s in Takht. She plays Ranveer and Vicky’s sister. Jahanara was a highly influential lady in the Mughal court during her father and Aurangzeb’s reigns who was allowed to speak her mind and gave advice. Anil plays their father Shahjehan, considered to be the most competent of the Mughal Emperors but who was imprisoned by Aurangzeb during the war of succession. It’s a powerful role too.”

Alia Bhatt will reportedly play Ranveer’s wife in the film, Begum Nadira Banu, while the role of Aurangzeb’s wife Dilras Banu Begum will allegedly be played by Bhumi Pednekar. She was the emperor’s first wife who died early. Jahnavi Kapoor may essay the role of a slave girl, Hira Bai, with whom Aurangzeb was in love.

Talking about Takht’s cast to Film Companion, Karan said, “It’s an unusual mix of talent. They are actors who have walked the parallel path, we have the superstar dynamic with Kareena (Kapoor), there’s Anil Kapoor who I have never directed before – but each actor fits the part to the tee. It’s not that I have gone to them because I have access. It’s a strange dichotomy. Each one has never played a part like this and yet each one fit it perfectly.

In a tweet, Karan had described the movie as, “An incredible story embedded in history… An epic battle for the majestic Mughal throne… A story of a family, of ambition, of greed, of betrayal, of love & of succession… TAKHT is about WAR for LOVE…”
