Days after Tom Cruise wowed his Indian fans by organising a special promotional premiere of his latest flick, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and announcing that the film will hit Indian theatres a good six days before its United States release, theatregoers and comic book addicts have another treat in store.
The Avengers, an American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, starring a team of popular superheroes, will also take over Indian screens before reaching foreign shores.
Slated to hit India on April 27 next year, (the United States launch being a week later on May 4), the superhero film, based on the celebrated comic book clique, features an ensemble including everyone from Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk, to Thor and Captain America.
Does the film’s prior release have anything to do with the burgeoning comic book industry in India? Seshasaye Kanthamraju, executive director, marketing and distribution, Walt Disney Studios, India doesn’t think so.
“It’s got nothing to do with comic books. We are building on the Walt Disney brand in the country and the moment we got an opportunity to open it (The Avengers) first in India, we grabbed it.”
Seshasaye’s company has been eyeing the Indian market keenly. Last year, it was Beauty And The Beast, and this year, the 3D release of Lion King, which made
theatregoers rejoice with the track Hakuna Matata…’.
Cashing in on the Indian audiences, the release before the United States format has now emerged as a key selling point for distributors in India. However, insisting that the move has nothing to do with profits, Kanthamraju says, “The release is never planned on that basis. It’s all about finding a good time line, and we did. “.

The film directed by Joss Whedon, stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson among others.
