When it comes to films, it’s real-life stories and socially relevant projects that interest actor Yami Gautam. And that’s because such narratives, she says, “entertain as well as educate” the audiences.
Yami’s next two films are on the same lines — Batti Gul Meter Chalu depicts the problem of electricity in small towns and villages in India, and Uri is about the surgical strike by Indian Army in the Pakistan occupied part of Kashmir that took place after the Uri terror attacks in September 2016.

“Socially relevant stories, for me, are the ones that impact human life,” says Yami. “Piku (2015) had a message and so did Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017). So, I think such stories have a broad range, and I love how they can be engaging as well as entertaining. It’s like a wholesome experience. My next two films are all heart but relevant in today’s society. When you can entertain people and still engage them in a socially relevant conversation, it’s the best this medium can offer,” she adds.
The actor admits that such films can be tricky to make, as the issues need to be dealt with sensitively and with proper understanding of the subject. All praise for the directors of her next two films, Shree Narayan Singh and Aditya Dhar, Yami says, “Shree is lethal! The way he understands problems faced by people in rural areas and how he is able to take that understanding and weave it into a story that entertains and educates audiences is an absolute marvel. “And Aditya is a director who has clarity of vision and has a fresh approach to stories and that attracted me most to the script.”

{{/usCountry}}When asked about what kind of socially relevant stories she thinks should be explored in Bollywood, Yami responds, “Any social issue being faced by the country can be made into a film to educate the masses on the goings-on in the country. I believe, as artists, it is our job to portray the society for what it is, and if cinema is the way to grab people’s attention to topics of utmost relevance then so be it! Cinema can be both inspirational and aspirational, it depends on what the viewer wants to interpret out of it.”
