Out of the numerous biographies written on Mahatma Gandhi, we came across two very recent and distinctive ones.
While one is a graphic novel depicting Bapu’s life with eye-catching illustrations, the other is more of an insightful look into his life, his principles, and his followers. Though the first book, Gandhi — my life is my message by Jason Quinn tells the great man’s story with the help of pictures, it is surprisingly quite detailed.
One gets to know many unique things about the Mahatma, like the fact that he used to feel embarrassed when anyone used to refer to him by that title, how he was lovingly called ‘Monia’ by his father, that he was afraid of the dark during his childhood, his sorrow on losing his son Maganlal, and other interesting incidents. The other book, Ved Mehta’s 1977 classic, Mahatma Gandhi and His Apostles, starts by talking in detail about Gandhi’s way of life, his daily routine at his ashram, his strong ideals — explained to the author by Gandhi’s many followers and relatives.
In fact, the book only moves to Bapu’s chronological biography after a good 75 pages. But it’s worth a read, albeit a patient one.
