On International Women’s Day, the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction announced its 2017 longlist. The list this year features 16 titles –culled from 189 submissions – including books by literary giants such as Margaret Atwood and Annie Proulx.
Part of Vintage’s Hogarth Shakespeare project, Atwood’s novel is a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s The Tempest while Barkskins by Proulx – set in 17th century France – tells the story of the descendants of two Frenchmen over a period of 300 years.
The debut works in the running for the £30,000 award are Emma Flint’s Little Deaths, Fiona Melrose’s Midwinter and Ayobami Adebayo’s Stay With Me. A shortlist of six novels will be selected from the pool and revealed on April 3, before the winner is announced on June 7.
The prestigious annual prize is awarded to a female author every year, for a work of fiction written in English. Previous years’ winners include Lisa McInerney’s Glorious Heresies, Ali Smith How To Be Both, and Eimear McBride for A Girl is a Half-formed Thing.
