After delivering many memorable performances as an actor over the last three decades, Pankaj Kapur recently decided to go behind-the-camera. And now, as his directorial debut, Mausam, is gearing up for a September 16 release, Kapur is planning to turn author.

He is compiling hundreds of personal love letters that he has preserved over the years as a hobby, for a book he plans to call Mausam Of Love. “I strongly believe any romance is forever. And there are some beautiful poems and couplets I want to preserve for eternity,” says Kapur, adding, “I haven’t short-listed the letters I will include, but there are lots of them, and there are couplets and poems too. So it will be a good mix.” The book is expected to be published next month and may have a still from Mausam on the cover.

Interestingly, the letters aren’t those sent to him by his fans, like most would expect. “These are personal letters from friends and lovers,” says the filmmaker who has responded to many of them. “I won’t be sharing any names. The letters I wrote will also be included.” Kapur received his first love letter when he was in school. “That was years ago,” he smiles. “And the last time was a few years ago.” He adds that none of these letters have been in response to his intense performances in films.
