How to Marry the Man of your Choice
Authors: Margaret Kent
Publisher: Hachette India
Price: Rs 550

It might be a New York Times Bestseller, may have sold a million copies but it really doesn’t contain the formula to ‘marry the man of your choice’, simply because the author expects one to put in a lot of effort into strategising and thinking about how to entrap the man.

Her ‘what not to do’s’ are at times witty but mostly unbelievable, especially when she suggests that a woman should not wear sharp earrings on her first date as the man, who would otherwise envision himself nibbling on her earlobes, could get distracted; or when talking about where to meet men she asks one to strike up conversations in a doctor’s waiting room or become a shoeseller to meet men. So you can “ask him about his shoes” to start a conversation.

Although at some places, the book does give logical explanations on how to deal with a man when he is angry so that it doesn’t turn into a fight, how to make him feel unique or how to criticise and not insult; the book largely makes the woman look like a giver and a strategist whose always thinking about what to do when the man is around. One wonders. Can a relationship really work if you put so much effort into it?
