When Sterling K. Brown won Best Supporting Actor for TV series American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson (2016), it was an emotional moment as Brown is the first black actor to win in this category since Jeffrey Wright’s 2004 win for Angels in America. “A lot of you may not have known who I was but you checked the box anyway, and that makes me very, very happy,” he said.
2. Jane Lynch
In 2013, Jane Lynch gave a tribute to Cory Monteith, her co-star from Glee who died of an accidental overdose. She said, “Cory was a beautiful soul.... Tonight we remember Cory for all he was, and mourn the loss of all he could have been.”

{{/usCountry}}TV show Transparent fared very well in 2015, and Jeffrey Tambor won best actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of Maura Pfefferman, a member of the trans community. “I had a teacher who used to say, ‘When you act, you have to act as if your life depends on it,’” he said. “Now I’ve been given the opportunity to act, because people’s lives depend on it.”
4. America Ferrera
Ugly Betty star America Ferrera became the first Latina in the history of the Emmys to win the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series award (2007). Ferrera recently revealed that as a teen she felt she had to dye her dark hair blonde and put white powder on her face for an audition.
5. Meryl Streep
After being announced as the Outstanding Lead Actress in a miniseries for Angels in America (2004), Meryl got on stage and began her speech with, “You know, there are some days when I, myself, think I’m overrated... but not today!”
