Take a rule-free break

Try it. Even if it’s for a day. Chances are, you won’t have missed anything important anyway. But you’ll have gained something more precious – yourself.

Good. Because sitting down (or better, lying down with your feet up) is a fantastic way to be reading Brunch. It means you’ve taken a break, aren’t chasing a deadline, following a headline, tweeting, courtesy greeting, scheduling, meddling and trying to conquer the world. In other words, you’re our kind of person.

Because, really, life’s not about being an annoying go-getter, doing 30 per cent overtime for a 20 per cent raise, networking like a smarmy jackass, being on top of your to-do list or dreaming so big you can’t see your feet. It’s about stretching, switching off your phone for a few hours every day, spending an afternoon watching bad TV and letting your mind wander, holidaying with no fixed plans, reading all the way to the end of an article (even one as tiny as this) and not telling Twitter what you’re doing, because, well, you’re doing nothing.

Try it. Even if it’s for a day. Chances are, you won’t have missed anything important anyway. But you’ll have gained something more precious – yourself.
