Coming up this summer are ‘Naughty Jatts’, comprising the usual: Neeru Bajwa, Binnu Dillon, BN Sharma and Karamjit Anmol; and relative newcomers including Aarya Babbar and Roshan Prince. This upcoming Punjabi film is directed by Pankaj Batra and produced by Satish Katyal and Sandeep Bhalla, who came with the cast at Hotel Park Plaza, Sector 17, to share details about the comedy, though the discussion inadvertently veered towards the reason for the prefix or suffix of ‘Jatt’ in most Punjabi films’ titles.
Aarya Babbar, whose been making a quiet and steady progress in his acting career, said he had backed for a different title for the film. “I didn’t want Naughty Jatts to be the title, instead I tried my best to convince Pankaj to stick to the original, Chandigarh Kare Ashiqui,” he announced, leaving the director in a spot. Pankaj, who last directed Punjabi film Virsa, was quick to point out, “If you notice, there haven’t been more than four films in the past two years with the word Jatt in their titles. ‘Jatt’ related well to my subject. It is a short and crispy word and an appropriate synonym for naughty.”
The quirkiest take came from Punjab’s latest comedy king, Binnu Dhillon, who said, “Masaan tan Jatt nu Mercedes toh utaar ke ghodhe te bethaya hai (With much difficulty, Jatts have begun to be depicted as earthy and rustic, breaking away from the initial Mercedes-driving elite class). Now that they are shown to be rooted, it’s a good sign.”
A rom-com, Naughty Jatts has been written by Naresh Kathuria (writer of Carry On Jatta), who has also penned the screenplay and dialogues of the film. Added Binnu, “The film will be totally clean, with a blend of urban and desi dialogues. Our target is to make the audience laugh so that it feels de-stressed. However, it would be a challenge to outdo Carry on Jatta, which has already made a mark as a successful comedy,” he acknowledged.
