Sensex up 30 points in volatile trading, Nifty above 11,050

The BSE 30-share barometer dropped by 54.30 points or 0.15% to 36,085.68 in opening trade as index major Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and Bharti Airtel declined.

Market benchmark Sensex witnessed choppy trading in late morning deals, up 30.37 points ahead of Futures and Options (F&O) derivative expiry for January series on Thursday, while the broader Nifty-50 held above 11,050.

The 30-share index was trading marginally higher by 30.37 points or 0.08% at 36,170.35 at 1050 hours. It hit all time high of 36,268.19 in early trade.

The broader Nifty was trading flat at 11,087.80, marginally up by 4.10 points or 0.04%.

Major gainers were TCS 3.08%, Infosys 2.33%, Dr Reddy Labs 1.72%, Yes Bank 1.30%, ITC 1.12% and Wipro 1.02%.

Laggards included Bharti Airtel 4.76%, Tata Motors 2.18%, ICICI Bank 1.82%, Asian Paint 1.67% and Tata Steel 1.64%.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 1,229.35 crore on net basis while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) also picked up equities to the tune of Rs 169.03 crore Tuesday, provisional data showed.

Most Asian markets declined on profit booking after recent gains. US stocks closed mixed yesterday, with market focus shifting from politics to corporate earnings after a government shutdown came to an end on Monday.
