NEW DELHI: State-owned Airports Authority of India (AAI) will invest ₹15,000 crore over the next five year for developing airport infrastructure in the country, aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju has said.

“AAI to make investments of Rs 15k cr over the next 5 years, incl Rs 10k cr on upgradation & expansion of 20 airports,” the minister tweeted on Wednesday.

AAI is the country’s largest airport operator managing a total of 125 airports including eleven international airports and 81 domestic airports besides civil enclaves at defence airfields.

Under the Regional Connectivity Scheme( RCS) unveiled earlier this month, government plans to extend air connectivity to smaller towns and cities. There area total of 394 un-served airports and 16 under-served airports in the country, which would be upgraded by AAI. The ministry has already sought a budgetary provision of ₹4,650 crore to revive 50 un-served and underserved airports.

“In order to implement the scheme, a proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance for making a budgetary provision of ₹4,650 crore (approximately) to revive a total of 50 such airports/ airstrips,” minister of state for aviation Jayant Sinha had told Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
