Economics must drive politics today and economic considerations must remain in the forefront of efforts to achieve foreign policy goals, said Rajkumar Dhoot, outgoing president, Assocham at a recent event.

“In order to reap full political benefits of economic diplomacy, leadership will have to take decisions to break the mindset, which defines national security and trade policy separately,” Dhoot said.

Salman Khurshid, external affairs minister who was also present on the occasion, said that economic diplomacy has always played a pivotal role in India’s politics.

He also said that various economic bodies today, which include G-20, World Bank and International Monetary Fund, serve as platform to carry economic diplomacy.
