Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation is planning to introduce SMS (Short Messaging Services) alerts which would keep passengers on the waiting list updated about the current status of their tickets.

"In SMS messages alert services, the passengers will have to send a single SMS with their PNR number and they will receive three SMS messages updating them with the current status of their tickets," an IRCTC official said.

"When a passenger will send an SMS message, first of all he will get the SMS mentioning current status of his ticket. He will receive another SMS when his ticket would be upgraded to RAC and finally the third one after the confirmation," he said.

The cost of the SMS messages, including those received, would be equivalent to normal amount charged by the mobile operators, to be paid by the passenger, the official said.

The official, however, said that within a month the IRCTC would introduce SMS messages services through which passengers can get one time information about the status of their waitlisted ticket or train's timing.

"The passengers have to send an SMS message with their PNR or train number to 56300. After that they will receive a message which would provide them the necessary information," he said.
