“The move to allow commercial imports of Indian yarns is short sighted and it seems to be a success (for) traders' lobby,” Bangladesh Textile Mills Association president Abdul Hai Sarker said.

The textile ministry last week decided to allow yarn import from India through land ports to arrest rise of yarn price that affected handloom weavers and small weaving industries.

More than 300 spinners are in operation in Bangladesh. Most of them feed the export-oriented knitwear and denim manufacturers but many of the spinners depend on local market.

Bangladeshi spinners annually produce around 1,600 million kg of yarns.
