The series of bombings in India’s economic boomtowns—Ahmedabad and Bangalore—could soon have Central Industrial Security Force providing security cover to sensitive private sector installations in these cities.
IT and other key private sector companies have been, for long demanding CISF cover to save itself from any eventuality, and Home Minister Shivraj Patil’s said last week that the government could just do that. “We are ready to amend the law and provide security to them,” he said.
CISF already provides cover to 217 public sector companies and is keen to take up the new responsibility if laws are suitably amended.
“We are waiting for the government to take a decision (to amend the law). As in the past we are prepared to take up the task,” Ranjit Kumar Das, director general, CISF, told HT.
Apart from providing security cover to government installations including airports, ports, steel plants, refineries, and important government installations, CISF also provides security and fire consultancy to both public and private sectors.
The ISO 9001 certified security agency has several private sector companies that consult it for security matters including Mukesh Ambani promoted Jamnagar Refinery, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), Infosys Systems in Bangalore, Hero Honda plant in Daru Hera, Haryana and TISCO, Jamshedpur.
“Since 2001, we have been providing consultancy to the private sector company on the entire gamut of security right from access control to disaster management,” CISF spokesperson Rohit Katiyar said.
