Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sent an e-mail to all public sector bank officials asking them carry out the financial inclusion programme — Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana — with diligence.
The programme, which Modi announced on Independence Day, will be launched on August 28 across the nation.
The mail has been sent to all chairmen and managing directors who have been advised to forward it to rest of the staff.
“We need to enroll over 70 million households and open their accounts… This is a national priority and we must rise to meet this challenge. There is an urgency to this exercise as all other development activities are hindered by this single disability. I am sure we will overcome this situation collectively,” Modi has written.
“The gesture is first of its kinds and the mail underlines the need to take up the financial inclusion programme on mission mode...it will take everybody along,” TM Bhasin, chairman, Indian Banks’ Association said.
Under the scheme, which would be taken up in a mission mode, 150 million new bank accounts would be opened for 75 million identified households by August 2018.
Meanwhile, IDBI Bank on Monday announced it would open 200,000 basic accounts as part of the Prime Minister’s financial inclusion plan.
