“Outbound travel has taken a hit, with a 7-8% drop in bookings in the last three months,” said Iqbal Mulla, president, Travel Agents Association of India.

But Madhavan Menon, managing director, Thomas Cook India, says it’s a little early to quantify the impact. “There’s been no impact on winter bookings. For 2012 summer bookings, it’s too early as people have only paid token amounts and we expect an adverse impact on the leisure side, rather than corporate or business,” he said.

India could see greater inbound tourist arrivals as it would become cheaper for foreign tourists, said Ajay Bakaya, of Sarovar Hotels and Resorts.
