Apparently unhappy with the decision of the IIM-Ahmedabad to effect a huge jump in its post graduate fee structure, the Human Resource Development ministry has said the increase should be in stages and is likely to take a view on the issue.
"We always feel that the increase should be in stages. Now that the increase is quite a quantum jump, we have to take a view," sources in the ministry said.
Indian Institute of Management-A on Saturday announced a hike in its fees structure raising it from the present Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5.5 lakh for the first year and Rs six lakh for the second year of the two year post graduate programme in management.
Though the government has given autonomy to the prestigious IIMs, "we will have to take a view" in the wake of such increases, the sources said without elaborating.
The fee hike would be applicable to students joining the two-year course in June this year. IIM-A, however, reiterated its commitment to support eligible students from the economically weaker sections.
No student, if found eligible for admission to the IIM-A, would be deprived of the opportunity purely for financial reasons, Vijaypat Singhania, Chairman of the Board of Governors and society of the IIM-A had said while announcing the fee hike.
