Industry body ties up with varsity for better IT training

Information technology (IT) students at Mumbai University can now learn from the best in the business.

National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) and the university are signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for five years, following which new elective courses will be designed for technology, business and management courses and placement procedures will be strengthened.

NASSCOM will have an office at the Vidyanagari campus in Kalina to help students in their training and search for jobs. Member companies of the association, like Sun Microsystems and Accenture, will also re-train teachers from engineering colleges.

“We will be working on the faculty development programme in which member companies will provide resources,” said Rajiv Vaishnav, vice-president, NASSCOM. “For instance, companies like ITC and Satyam will send their staff to conduct workshops with the faculty of IT departments.”

“NASSCOM knows the needs of the IT industry. By updating the curriculum, the university can provide trained manpower to the industry. In turn, NASSCOM can help provide better placement opportunities to our students,” said Vijay Khole, vice-chancellor. “Students will also be given an opportunity to work on research projects taken by NASSCOM, so they get more experience and exposure.”

“Multiple engagements with the Mumbai University will ensure that the time spent on training students will be reduced to a certain extent,” said Vaishnav.
