Conceived to bridge the digital divide, 'Akshaya', the ambitious e-literacy programme is being extended to seven more districts -- Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta and Kollam after its successful implementation in Malappuram.

The project of the state government's IT Mission is being implemented with the active participation of the Local Self Governance, Public Relations and Town Planning departments.

A total of 1,321 centres, `Akshaya e-kendras,' by prospective entrepreneurs, for which online applications had been called for, would come up in the seven districts, the project's state co-ordinator T K Mansoor said.

With the state becoming an IT destination with Dubai Internet City's proposal to set up their `Smart City' in Kochi, the IT education scheme is bound to go a long way in ensuring the participation of people in the projects.

Since the entrepreneur is the key element in the programme, seminars to make them aware of the scheme would be held between June 18 and 25 in the seven districts.

Though the primary attraction of the scheme is computer literacy, nurturing of social entrepreneurs and its follow-up is also being given importance.

"It should not be diluted merely as a computer literacy scheme," Mansoor said.
