Khadi meets coarse path in export drive

Despite the growing popularity of khadi and handloom fabric and traditional consumable products such as honey and spices abroad, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has failed to tap the opportunity, as is evident from its export figures.

Despite the growing popularity of khadi and handloom fabric and traditional consumable products such as honey and spices abroad, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has failed to tap the opportunity, as is evident from its export figures.

While the khadi and village industries products of KVIC achieved a commendable sale of Rs 24,000 crore in the domestic market in 2009-10, export stood at Rs 83 crore.

Though, in percentage terms, exports show a 106% growth from 2005-06 to 2009-10, in terms of the quantum of sale, it shows an increase of only Rs 42 crore. Domestic sales grew by Rs 9,000 crore in the period.

Exports contributed 0.3% to domestic sales in 2009-10.

The KVIC CEO did not respond to emails and phone calls by HT.
