The domestic industry witnessed one of its best years in 2009 in terms of labour relations.

According to the Economic Survey, total number of strikes and lockouts and man-days lost as a result of that have come down drastically last year.
Though figures are available only for January-November period, 2009 witnessed only 91 strikes and 31 lockouts with a cumulative man-day loss of 2.9 million. The numbers for the full year 2008 were 250 strikes, 182 lockouts and 17.5 million man-days loss.
Generally, labour relations have been improving over the years from the highs of 2004 and 2005 when 23.9 million and 29.7 million man-days were lost, respectively.
Last year, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan witnessed maximum unrest, while financial intermediaries including insurance and pension funds was the most affected sector.
