This would be useful to consumers when mobile number portability is introduced in the country. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has said that number portability would be introduced from January 1, 2010.

“This is expected to put pressure on telecom service providers to improve quality of services,” TRAI Chairman J.S. Sarma told Hindustan Times.

Call drop rate (number of call drops out of 100 calls made), quality of voice, fault incident and repair and billing
related issues are the four parameters that TRAI will regulatory publish in newspapers every quarter.

The regulator would use regional newspapers. For example, performance of Maharashtra operators would be published in Marathi newspapers while for service providers in Bengal it will be in Bangla newspapers.

Service providers blame the government, saying that companies have not been allotted enough spectrum to meet their needs. The government says that the operators are not spending on infrastructure to make optimum use of spectrum.
