The PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) is on an expansion spree. The chamber, which has a presence in 10 states, mostly in northern India, is eyeing Bihar and Jharkhand as its next destinations.
"We don't believe in opening offices in a state just to register our presence. Rather, we want to keep our niche intact and ensure our role in the state's development," said Salil Bhandari, president, PHDCCI.
The chamber mainly focusses on industry, infrastructure, agriculture, health, education and housing and urban development.
"Our thrust has always been on integrating global and national issues with the state ones and providing a national perspective to issues in the states where we are present," Bhandari said.
"We're organising Farm Tech 2011 in Madhya Pradesh to improve the state's farm productivity by exposing 1.1 lakh farmers to new technology, mechanisation and provide information on getting the best output and price for their produce."
Bhandari wants to ensure that the PHDCCI acts as a facilitator in implementation of policies at the ground level in states.
In its pre-budget wishlist, the chamber has suggested an increase in investments on railway tracks, state roads and dry ports. "The government should do away with the minimum alternate tax (MAT) and reduce central sales tax (CST) to 1% till the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The stimulus to the industry should continue till inflation is under control," Bhandari said.
