The ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME), along with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Toys Association of India (TAI) are working towards setting up of an innovation centre for toys at Ghaziabad.
“We’re trying to bring back the initiative that began way back and get an agreement done between the government and TAI for setting up of an innovation centre for toy manufacturing,” said MSME secretary RK Mathur on Friday while inaugurating the 6th Toy Biz International Expo at Pragati Maidan here. The innovation centre, for which land was allocated almost a decade back, needs a push from the government towards setting up at Ghaziabad. Mathur said, while the toy
manufacturers can use the ministry’s design clinic scheme for innovative designing, the domestic manufacturers need to take care while using materials, chemicals and designing toys for children.

{{/usCountry}}TAI emphasised the need to counter the cheaper Chinese toys flooding Indian market and urged government support to manufacture better designed and cheaper toys.
“There’s a need for government’s support, so that recommendations made by the department of industrial policy & promotion in 2009 could be in place,” said president, TAI, Raj Kumar. “We’ve given proposal to government to set up toy libraries and we’ll provide toys,” he said.
“Instead of fighting over the anti-dumping duty issue to prevent Chinese toys, we want to have our own capacity-building and innovation along with educating people to go for Indian toys instead of cheaper Chinese ones,” Raj Kumar said.
