Posco to provide allowance to displaced betel vine workers

South Korean steel major Posco announced its rehabilitation and resettlement package on Friday for displaced families in three gram panchayats of Jagatsinghpur, reports Soumyajit Pattnaik.

South Korean steel major Posco announced its rehabilitation and resettlement package on Friday for displaced families in three gram panchayats of Jagatsinghpur district where 4,004 acres have been earmarked for the 12-million tonne steel project.

Posco-India has agreed to pay an unemployment allowance to the betel vine workers who would be rendered jobless. Besides, displaced families from government land would also be be given houses in the rehabilitation colony.

Announcing the package, Posco-India executive director Uma Ballav Patnaik said, "Betel vine workers who will be rendered jobless after dismantling of betel vine structures will be paid reasonable amount of unemployment allowance for a period of six months or till they will get wage employment under the contractor. A joint enumeration will be done by the government and Posco to prepare the list of betel vine workers for issuing eligibility cards for employment as daily wage workers in Posco-India's construction work through contract agencies."

The company also announced that the scope of direct employment would arise after commissioning of the plant. "One nominated member of each displaced family and 100 per cent of the family losing land will be provided training and employment. One nominated member of other land affected families will be provided training free of cost for gaining employment in outsourced jobs," Patnaik added.
