The intense monsoon and weather fluctuations in areas that supply vegetables to Delhi have affected produce, with the prices of several vegetables more than doubling over the past one week.
Delhi gets tomatoes from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, where flash floods have destroyed farmlands. Most of the region's remaining produce, too, was spoilt in the warm period that followed the intense rains.
Green vegetables come from the Yamuna belt around Delhi, while other farm produce is sourced from Nashik, Bangalore and Gujarat - regions also affected by heavy rains.
Officials offered some hope on Thursday, claiming that the price of tomatoes was likely to stabilise by the end of next week, with supply from other states expected to come to the city.
"The prices should be brought under control within a week as we expect the supply from places such as Bangalore, Nashik and Himachal Pradesh to go up," said Anil Malhotra, member of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee.
But the prices of onions, cauliflower, capsicum and potatoes will continue to remain high, causing distress to many households.
