Ranbaxy Laboratories has said that it is shifting the focus of its research from the development of new drugs to that of generic drugs for effecting better synergy with its Japanese parent, Daiichi Sankyo.

"Now we believe, with Daiichi Sankyo, it makes sense for us to concentrate more on generics (research), and find the right integration with the parent company," said Atul Sobti, CEO and MD, Ranbaxy Laboratories.
Earlier, Ranbaxy also focused on new drug development through a new chemical entity research unit, which played a role in developing a molecule indicated for malaria treatment.
