The Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Energy Limited (REL) is learnt to have won the country's second largest power transmission joint venture after Power Grid Corporation approved a Rs 800-crore project with REL for a 453 circuit kilometer Parbati-Koldam power transmission line.
REL will hold 74 per cent equity holding in the venture.
The project will transport power from NTPC and NHPC's hydro projects in Himachal, sources close to the development said. When contacted, a Reliance spokesperson refused to comment.
Parbati-Kaldam would become the second largest power transmission JV in the country, after Bhutan's Tala transmission line project run by a JV between Tata Power and Power Grid.
Reliance Energy has power generation projects in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala and Goa with a combined installed generation capacity of 941mega watt. Reliance Power, a subsidiary of REL, is developing the 4,000-mega watt Sasan ultra mega power project in Madhya Pradesh.
Reliance Energy has received a mandate to set up a 300 km transmission line for the Parbati and Koldam projects in Himachal Pradesh and a 1,550-km transmission line under the western region system strengthening (WRSS) scheme-II.
The project will involve a total investment of Rs 2,750 crore. Power Grid Corporation, the nodal agency for WRSS and Parbati-Koldam, had invited bids for the 1,600mega watt Parbati-Koldam projects in February 2004. The project is likely to be commissioned by March 2010.
