The rupee gained 9 paise to 46.21 a dollar in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market on Friday on increased capital inflows by foreign funds into equities.

The rupee had closed higher by 24 paise at 46.30/31 against the dollar in Thursday's trading.

Dealers said fresh capital inflow into equities by foreign funds provided support to the rupee.
The Bombay Stock Exchange index rose by 57.49 points to 17,674.18 points in opening trade on Friday.
