The benchmark BSE index gained 81 points to close above the 15,000 level for the first time on Monday on buying by funds in heavy-weight stocks, particularly of capital goods and metal sectors.

The 30-share Sensex, which had touched 15k level on Friday but closed a shade lower, climbed 81.61 points, or 0.55 per cent, to settle at a record high of 15,045.73. Earlier, it touched an intra-session high of 15,085.22 points.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty rose by 34.55 points, or 0.79 per cent, at 4,419.40. It also touched a new intra-day peak of 4,427.55 points.

Market observers said buying was centred around stocks of engineering, capital goods and construction companies on expectations that first quarter earnings will be strong, lifting the Sensex to a record high.

Stocks of banking, oil and gas, PSU, healthcare and Information Technology were also in good demand.
