The 30-share index Sensex, which remained firm in the last two sessions, fell by 87.12 points to 8,867.74 points in the first five minutes of trading.
Similarly, the 50-share National Stock Exchange's index Nifty declined by 33.00 points to 2,752.65 points.
Marketmen said a weak trend in the US stock markets mainly influenced the trading sentiment as foreign funds refrained from enlarging their holdings.
Information Technology and realty sectors were the major losers in early trade.
