The 13-day tool down strike at Mahindra & Mahindra's Igatpuri engine plant came to an end on Monday with two suspended workers being reinstated. The company said in a statement that it has revoked the suspension of two workers after they tendered a written and unconditional apology.
The strike that stalled production at the engine plant came to an end following the management's talks with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray. The suspended workers belong to Shiv Sena's trade union Bharatiya Kamgar Sena.
The Igatpuri plant produces engines for Mahindra vehicles such as XUV500, Xylo, Genio and Maxximo and churns out 1,100 units per day. The suspension of work, notwithstanding two weekly offs and two holidays during the strike days, is estimated to have caused a production loss of 8,000 units.
However, M&M maintained that the strike had no impact on sales volume as the inventory and increased engine production in other plants helped it tide over the production loss at Igatpuri.
M&M statement also said that Suryakant Mahadik, president, Bharatiya Kamgar Sena, has given an assurance that workers would not indulge in any breach of discipline in the future.
"The management has also received a personal assurance from the Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray that such instances will not be repeated in future," it said.
