The Chinese subsidiary of India's third largest software exporter, Wipro Shanghai Ltd, will serve as a regional hub for company's global operations.

"We got a license to do business in China in April and the development centre in Shanghai Pudong Software Park will become fully functional by September," president and representative director of Wipro Shanghai Ltd Masaki Nagao told PTI over phone from Japan.

So far the company has invested $200,000 in its China operations. "As our client base in China grows we will expand our development centre in Shanghai or open new centres at other locations," he said.

Initially, the focus of Wipro's Chinese subsidiary will be the company's global customers. "We have set up a subsidiary and development centre in Shanghai as many of our global customers wanted to work with us in China too," Nagao, who also heads Wipro's Japanese subsidiary, said.

"As most of our basic research and development work is done in India, the China development centre of Wipro will work on localisation of software and provide implementation and support services," he said.

By opening a subsidiary in China, Wipro joins the league of other software exporters like Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys Technologies who have a presence in China.
