Yahoo said on Friday it would evaluate a hostile bid for Microsoft "carefully and promptly" after the software giant made an offer for the Internet giant.

Yahoo said it was examining the "unsolicited proposal" and added that its board "will evaluate this proposal carefully and promptly in the context of Yahoo's strategic plans and pursue the best course of action to maximize long-term value for shareholders."

Microsoft said earlier on Friday it had offered to buy Yahoo for 44.6 billion dollars in a bid to compete with Google in the crucial battle for online revenues.
