VinFast emerged as the fourth highest-selling electric vehicle brand in India in December 2025, finishing ahead of several established players despite having a limited product lineup.
VinFast breaks into the top four in December
According to the latest monthly EV sales data on Vahan portal, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility led the market with 6,434 units, followed by JSW MG Motor India with 3,555 units. Mahindra Electric Automobile Ltd took third place with 3,065 units. VinFast Auto India Pvt Ltd ranked fourth, recording 375 units during the month.

While the gap between VinFast and Mahindra remains wide, the Vietnamese brand’s December sales stands out because it stayed ahead of the rest of the pack. This group includes legacy manufacturers such as Hyundai Motor India and Kia India, which sold 262 and 313 electric vehicles, respectively, in December 2025.

Why Tata, MG and Mahindra still lead the chart
Tata’s continued lead can largely be attributed to the depth of its EV portfolio in the affordable segments. Models such as the Punch EV and Nexon EV have helped the brand reach a wider audience. The Punch EV starts at ₹9.99 lakh, while the Nexon EV is priced from ₹12.49 lakh (ex-showroom), making them accessible to a large section of urban and semi-urban buyers.

{{/usCountry}}MG, which finished second, has also benefited from competitive pricing. The Comet EV, starting at ₹7.49 lakh, and the Windsor EV, priced from ₹13.99 lakh (ex-showroom), have helped MG stay ahead of Mahindra in monthly volumes.
Mahindra, despite having multiple electric models, operates at a higher entry point. Its most affordable EV, the XUV400, is priced from ₹17.49 lakh (ex-showroom), which places it firmly in the mid-range segment.

How VinFast stayed ahead of Hyundai and Kia
VinFast currently sells just two electric SUVs in India: the VF6 and VF7. The VF6 is priced at ₹17.29 lakh, while the VF7 starts at ₹21.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Despite this relatively premium positioning, VinFast has managed to outperform brands like Hyundai and Kia in December.
Hyundai’s EV presence is currently limited to the Creta EV, which starts at ₹18.02 lakh (ex-showroom). Kia operates in a similar price band with the Carens Clavis EV, priced from ₹17.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
A major factor working in VinFast’s favour is its local manufacturing strategy, which has allowed it to price its vehicles more competitively than other premium EV brands operating in India.
Among luxury and premium players, BMW India sold 343 units, Mercedes-Benz India recorded 237 units, and Tesla India reported 68 units in December. These numbers highlight how VinFast has positioned itself ahead of several higher-end brands, despite being relatively new to the Indian EV market.
