Tata is set to top India’s EV registrations in 2025, ahead of MG and Mahindra, as Hyundai and BYD remain in the top five.

Electric vehicle registrations in India during calendar year 2025 are being led by Tata Motors Passenger Electric Mobility, followed by JSW MG Motor India, Mahindra Electric, Hyundai Motor India and BYD India. These five manufacturers have recorded the highest passenger electric vehicle registration volumes in India in calendar year 2025, according to Vahan data.

Why Tata is finishing far ahead of the rest

Tata Motors Passenger Electric Mobility will end the year at the top with 65,264 units. A large part of this has come from the Punch EV and Nexon EV, both positioned in the more accessible end of the EV market and seeing consistent demand. Tata also stands apart for the breadth of its electric lineup. Alongside compact and mid-size EVs, the brand has expanded into higher segments with models such as the Harrier EV, giving it coverage across a wider price range than any other manufacturer.

JSW MG Motor India is set to finish second with 50,356 registrations. MG’s electric lineup is relatively small, but it has been effective. The Windsor EV has emerged as the main volume driver, sitting close to the Nexon EV on price while offering a more premium cabin experience. The Comet EV has also added to MG’s numbers, with its compact size and ease of use making it popular in urban markets.

Mahindra Electric Automobile will close the year with 29,917 units registered. Unlike Tata and MG, Mahindra’s electric offerings are largely focused on the higher end of the market. Models such as the BE 6, XEV 9e and the recently launched XEV 9s account for most of its EV registrations, keeping the brand concentrated in the premium electric SUV space rather than entry-level volumes.

Hyundai Motor India is on track to record 6,685 EV registrations in 2025. This performance has come from just one mass-market electric model in its lineup, the Hyundai Creta EV. Despite the limited choice, the Creta EV has helped Hyundai remain among the top five EV manufacturers by volume.

BYD continues to hold ground in the premium segment

BYD India is expected to end the year with 5,098 registrations. Positioned firmly in the premium segment, BYD has continued to post steady numbers despite pricing that sits above most locally developed electric vehicles.

Outside the top five, VinFast Auto India will close 2025 with 798 units, ahead of Tesla India Motors and Energy, which is set to record 223 units. VinFast’s advantage comes from local assembly of the VF6 and VF7, while Tesla imports the Model Y, attracting high import duties that push its price to around 60 lakh.

In the luxury EV segment, volumes remained limited, with brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche and Volvo continuing to operate in a niche market.
