He said this while chairing a session with IT industry representatives, including Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) members, to discuss IT, ITES and electronic manufacturing policy initiatives of the state IT department.

The minister said the state government had reserved about 1,700 acres of land for the development of a knowledge park at Mohali, of which 40 acres had been earmarked for the development of the electronics system design manufacturing (ESDM) cluster as per a central scheme.

Highlighting the importance of the ESDM sector, he added that India was a recognised global player in the software services sector but it lagged behind in electronics hardware manufacturing capabilities. "Hence, the Punjab government will draft a new policy for the ESDM sector, with a special package of incentives, so as to transform the state into a global ESDM hub," Kairon said.
