Police have arrested five residents of Ram Darbar (Phase-2) for allegedly smashing the windowpanes of 15 cars in the area on Wednesday night.
The windowpanes of cars parked outside the houses were smashed with iron roads and bricks. The cars damaged included Maruti 800, Zen, Alto, Hyundai i10, and Tata Safari.
The dwellers, led by former mayor Kamlesh, descended at the Chandigarh police headquarters at Sector 9 on Thursday and protested against the lax security in their area.
Kushboo, a resident of Ram Darbar, said area residents never felt safe as unruly elements seemed to rule the roost, with police preferring to stay away. “Apart from gambling, lawlessness prevailed in the area,” she said.
Former mayor Kamlesh said, “Miscreants went from one lane to another and hurled stones on cars parked outside the houses. We have demanded strict action and want the culprits behind bars.”
“The police have been ineffective. We have challenged the police to give us the powers and we will get the law and order on the right track,” she added.
Elvin, who had come from Delhi on Wednesday night to visit a relative, said, “I was to return on Thursday, but my car has been damaged. My car was parked between several cars and yet it was not spared.”

Sector-31 SHO Bhupinder Singh said, “Of the five arrested, one was arrested on Wednesday night itself. The accused are residents of Ramdarbar Phase-1 and were in the area for a wedding function, and were drunk.”
Sources in the police added that criminal cases had been registered against the five and three more people were likely to be arrested as more clues emerged.
