253 candidates from 13 Punjab LS segments in th fray

After 27 candidates withdrew their nominations on Friday and Saturday, a total of 253 candidates are in the fray for 13 parliamentary seats in Punjab.

After 27 candidates withdrew their nominations on Friday and Saturday, a total of 253 candidates are in the fray for 13 parliamentary seats in Punjab.

Additional chief electoral officer (CEO) Supreet Singh Gulati said 455 nominations were filed by 350 candidates, which were reduced to 280 following scrutiny.

The Hoshiar pur parliamentary constituency has 17 candidates, Ludhiana 22, Fatehgarh Sahib 15, Ferozepur 15, Gurdaspur 13, Anandpur Sahib 18, Khadoor Sahib 17, Patiala 20, Sangrur 21, Bathinda 29, Faridkot 19, Jalandhar 24 and Amritsar 23. The Bathinda parliamentary constituency has the maximum 29 contesting candidates whereas Gurdaspur has the least number of 13 candidates in the poll fray.

Interestingly, Simarjeet Singh Bains, independent candidate from Ludhiana constituency, has been allotted “letter box” as election symbol. Anandpur Sahib, Khadoor Sahib, Bathinda, Patiala and Fatehgarh Sahib candidates of SAD (Amritsar) have been given hockey ball as poll symbol, bucket for party’s candidate in Jalandhar and Ferozour, sewing machine for Sangrur candidate and kite for party’s candidate in Faridkot. The party was demanding cart as symbol which according to the election commission has been “frozen” and will not be allotted to anyone.
