The five-day training programme on gender, child rights and social sensitisation organised by the State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) under the aegis of UT department of social welfare concluded at Senior Citizens Home, Sector 43, here on Friday.
A total of 60 schoolteachers from various gover nment schools, representatives of NGOs from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh participated in the programme. UT director, social welfare, Rajesh Jogpal said the objectives of the training programme were to enlighten the participants on gender, child rights and social sensitisation.
In the first session, Prof Ronki Ram, dean, faculty social sciences, department of political science, Panjab University, clarified the divisive factors in Indian society: Caste, religion, class gender, language and region remedies.
He said India was multilingual and multicultural country, where one should not discriminate on the basis of these factors. It was the responsibility of teacher to encourage the child on the basis of human being but not on the basis of caste, class, religion, gender, language etc.
Prof Manvinder Kaur, department-cum-Centre for Women Studies, PU, differentiated between gender and sex. Unlike sex, which is a biological concept, gender is a social construction consisting of socially acceptable and prescribed roles that men and women are supposed to follow.
