On his call, police reached the spot and found the body on the floor. The victim’s hands were tied and the mouth gagged with pieces of cloth. Police said the throat was slit and there were visible injury marks on the body.

Naib Singh was an employee of Mahindra Swaraj Tractors Company at Phase 4 and was a native of Amlala village in Dera Bassi where the rest of his family stays. Police added that Naib, who lived alone, was a habitual drinker and an empty bottle of country liquor was found in the room along with a steel glass. These were sent to a forensic lab.

Neighbours said they had last seen Naib on September 4 in the balcony of the house. However, he did not talk much with the neighbours.

Police suspect it to be a robbery as the wallet and mobile phone of the deceased was missing. During investigation, the police also learnt that Naib had recently received reimbursement for his medical bills for a surgery. This amount, sources said, was nearly Rs 1 lakh. However, Rajveer Singh, a human resource staff at Swaraj, refused to give details.

Gurpreet said he had sent the property dealer to his father’s house as they wanted to sell the house for him to start a post-retirement life. The DSP said there were blood stains on walls, a clear indication of assault.
