Serious doubts are being raised over the quality of education provided in tricity’s schools as more than 65% of students, who had appeared for the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) Class 12 reappear examination, have failed to clear the test. A total of 4,386 students from the tricity had taken the compartment exam on July 16 out of which a staggering 2,883 students flunked.
Students from Chandigarh have once again had the poorest performance among their tricity counterparts as around 2,000 students from the city were unable to clear the compartment exam.
Chandigarh also had an unimpressive showing in the Class 12 examination of the CBSE, which was held in March, as around 24% of all the students from the city who had given the exam failed.
According to officials, over 20,000 students from the region comprising of Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, Panchkula, Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh were unable to clear the compartment examination.
Earlier, a total of 1.57 lakh students from the region had appeared in the Class 12 examination, out of which around 31,000 students had flunked. Commenting on the results, the president of the UT SSA Teachers Welfare Association Arvind Rana president blamed the current education policies for students’ below par performance in higher classes.
“As per the system, the schools cannot fail students until Class 8. The pressure that comes with higher classes gets too much for a few students and they are not able to cope with it. Unlike today, earlier students were grilled in the lower classes and thus they even excelled in the higher classes,” he said.

{{/usCountry}}“The results would continue to deteriorate in coming years if policies like Continuous and Comprehensive evaluation (CCE) are not scrapped by the board,” he added.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is likely to declare the results of Class 10 Improvement of Performance (IOP) exams on Wednesday.
